Lab Rat.

this week i am feeling so kevin mccalister. why? i've been home alone twice, last tuesday and today. in 2 different houses. how's lame is that. sometime i like being alone. most of the time actually, but scary. ok forget the scary part.

my other hausies are not here, and i am not sure we are they. i think everyone have something to do. i prefer not to disturb them.

English.

ermm... actually i commented on Khairy Jamaludin's note in FB about 'wajib lulus BI'. my comment; 'bagaimana dengan murid luar bandar?'. and another commentator commented 'pelajar luar bandar pun cerdik' or something similar to that. which i assume as a response to mine.

I went to school in Sabah rural area. both primary and secondary. i didnt go to boarding school because i only got 1 A in my UPSR, got C for my English. i was ok with it, my only aim at that time was to squeeze myself into arabic class. i did.

English have been always an issue. since yesteryears. i think the most affected would be the transition batches. those who born in 1983-1986. we are like in the buffer zone. when i was in matric college, science and math were taught in Malay. Exam questions were also in Malay, but some books are in english. better and full with more information books are in english. (at that time) Malay books were only text books, or module for syllabus. the contents have enough notes for exam but less in information.

but when i was doing my bachelor, some subjects are in english, some are in Malay. The reason why we cannot use fully english as a medium because ukm was established with role to hold up the flag of Bahasa Kebangsaan. but we still need to learn some of selected subjects in english, because that is the current policy. science and math must be taught in english. some lecturers were very lenient, they conducted class in bilingual. Notes were in English, but student were allowed to answer exam paper in Malay. Our lecturers were very generous. they must be. if not, habis lah keputusan exam kami. (me too, planning to be a generous teacher, someday).

pro; student who is poor in english need not to burn him/herself to answer science paper in English.

con; student has been given opportunity to avoid english. Again.

sometime we need to push this english down to our student's throat. itu pun kalau nak semua pandai dalam english lah. kalau tak selamanya kita akan buang masa bertekak, bersimposium pasal ppsmi. ada pro ada con. atau lebih tepat serba salah.

ok thats what happened in university level. how about in school?

in my former school, even teaching Bahasa Melayu was a problem. no wonder my former Bahasa Melayu teacher was very 'makan budak' type. she must be. if not, we will never learn how to write a summary. me probably, selama-lamanya guna perkataan 'yang' dipermulaan ayat masa buat karangan. everytime after exam or test. she usually read mistake that we did in our exam paper in front of class. one by one, she wont let go not even one soul. so we wont repeat the same damn mistake ever again.

terima kasih cikgu faridah. when i finished my spm, then i understand why she was very 'makan budak' type. she have to fight our thick head and worse, our thick tounge.

being a true full blooded Membakuti or to be more specific urang pimping, i speak thick Brunei dialect (should i say language?), everyday. i started speak proper Bahasa Melayu only when i was in matric (itu pun sebulan dua juga baru ok, selalu juga tersasul-sasul kurapak berunai). so can you imagine what kind of language we used in school?. kalau orang semenanjug baru sampai membakut, mesti terasa macam di luar negara mungkin. well, welcome to the other side of country.

masa ujian lisan saja mengada-ngada cakap bahasa melayu masa sekolah. teachers from semenanjung were converted as 'one of us'. they must be able at least to understand our dialect, better if they can speak like us do. macam mana tak terconvert, kalau kami dah main belasah kurapak berunai setiap masa, mahu atau tidak, mesti cikgu tu terpaham apa yang kami cakap.

the true problem appeared to surface when we wrote essay in Bahasa Melayu. haa.. mula lah.. perkataan seperti 'terabah', 'menyangkayut', 'menerais', 'melagau' tertulis di karangan kami. macam mana cikgu aku tak marah, aku pun marah kalau begitu. vocab used is impossibly comprehened. nasib baik cikgu aku local. kalau cikgu luar, lagi tension berganda-ganda. we dont even speak proper bahasa melayu. bahasa melayu rojak pun tidak. yes, i must say, we are very proud of our origin. our forefathers must be proud of us.

sekolah aku ada bangsa lain juga. but we were too dominant, especially the ever grand urang pimping. tapi budak-budak lain tu semua paham dialek kami, even ada yang pandai cakap.

itu kelas bahasa melayu tu. can you imagine teaching english in my (ex) school? the class could easily turn into some kind of daunting forest. i bet my former english teacher knows better. so if pass english paper is made compulsary... you do the maths.

memanglah ada juga murid luar bandar pandai. tapi di tempat aku, some schools (especially sekolah rendah) dont even have proper teacher, let alone proper books. harap buku teks sekolah. korang ingat semua pelajar tu ada buku kerja tambahan, buku teks terbitan pelangi. ada yang ada, ramai yang tiada. and teacher pun ada yang problem... nak tahu pergi sendiri lah check sekolah-sekolah di kawasan ulu.

i heard ramai cikgu yang dipindah ke kawasan ulu atau super ulu ni cikgu bermasalah. di kawasan aku sendiri ada cikgu pergi sekolah pukul 7.30 am balik pukul 10 am. ni sekolah rendah ni. bila masa sekolah rendah murid sudah tercicir. ramai murid yang masuk sekolah menengah tak pandai membaca. see how sad the situation is?.

kalau sekolah bandar, bandaraya, pekan, kampung contoh, desa wawasan boleh lah target nak dapatkan 20 orang murid upsr 5 A. yang ulu ni, kalau ada 2 orang yang dapat 1 A pun dah kira bonus. sebab ramai yang tidak pandai membaca. they went to school for 6 years but they cannot even read. do you expect they can pass english? this is bitter reality. but it is happening.

ada juga lah yang sekolah dekat bandar, dalam bandar, punya murid tercicir tak pandai membaca. itu pun masalah juga tu.

so how? just let them tercicir forever only the fittest will survive? or how? boleh wajib kan lulus bahasa inggeris kalau masalah keciciran sudah diatasi sepenuhnya. may be percentage of keciciran is low. tapi tetap ada. let those who cannot read tercicir? drifted?

murid tak pandai membaca ni boleh masuk sekolah menengah. so lets assume, by the time they are in form 2 dia sudah pandai membaca. dia tertinggal jauh... itu baru pandai membaca, belum tentu paham apa yang dia baca. may be, by the time they are in form 5, their level is still bubbling in menengah rendah level. do you expect these poor pupils will pass their english and eventually pass their spm? macam kes zaman aku dulu, nak harap lulus (bukan credit) bahasa melayu pun cikgu mengurut dada kerisauan. bahasa inggeris tu tak tahu lah.

the survival of the fittest lah ni... tak lulus, tak proceed. biar lah.. drifted macam tu... how about their future?

(at least tanya, mana tahu ada 'hang nadim').

my english is far from perfect. langit dan bumi. jauh panggang dari api. so does my standard Bahasa Melayu. i am still learning, keep on learning. tapi bila melihat budak sekolah di kampung aku yang agak rendah pencapaian akademik nya, buat aku rasa sedih. mereka ketinggalan. ada juga lah dulu aku dan kawan-kawan cuba buat kelas percuma untuk bantu mereka melalui late KMWM. tapi tak berpanjangan due to a lot of problems. kalau budak2 tu set appoinment, nak ulangkaji dengan aku every weekend, or suruh aku check latihan mereka, i'll do it for free. dengan syarat mereka yang mesti beriya-iya, want it so badly. bukan aku.

sambil tu boleh aku pun recall balik benda dulu2. tapi no one interested. ada juga my cousin yang tanya aku soalan kimia. tapi jarang sekali. bukan aku pandai sangat, tapi mana yang boleh tolong aku tolong. atau aku nak tolong.

acapkali aku salahkan pemuda ameno kawasan or bahagian. sebab bagi aku, they can play bigger role in upgrading local academic achievement, with thier source and work force. but sadly they do nothing. habis tu nak harapkan siapa? AMK atau dewan pemuda pas? oh.. dikawasan aku ni mostly totok bn, so AMK dan seumpamanya tu hidup segan mati pun segan. pas? hehehe... huhuhu hahaha...

please take note mr khairy, see your kawan2 ni...korporat sungguh. where is biro pendidikan? who? what? ada kah such thing? ke tulis atas kertas mesyorat saja.
